About the 'San Sebastian' Retablo Plaque

Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry.

Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors San Sebastian. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging on the wall and a story of the saint's life.

Saint Sebastian joined the Roman Army in 283 AD under Emperor Diocletian. Although promoted as a captain in the Praetorian Guard, Sebastian was covertly a Christian and provided service to other Christians who were prosecuted by the Romans, as well as converting numerous people to Christianity. Upon this discovery, Emperor Diocletian was furious at this betrayal. He ordered his men to execute Sebastian by using him for arrow target practice. Following this, the soldiers left Sebastian to die and rot. When a woman (Irene of Rome) came to bury him, she discovered Sebastian was still alive and nursed him back to health. Sebastian would find Diocletian and publicly berate the emperor for his persecution of Christians. Sebastian would not escape death as 2nd time, as the Emperor ordered him beaten. San Sebastian is recognized as the patron saint of archers, athletes, and soldiers. 'Holy  San Sebastian, we are given such wondrous bodies. May I be of good heart and remain centered in my body so I move with strength and grace, performing at my physical best'.
